Path To Pentecost (16)--May 14, 2025

May 15, 2025

In our Path To Pentecost we have been seeking to understand what it is to be filled with the Holy Spirit (being under the influence). Admittedly, there are matters of mystery but Ephesians 5 gives the series of participles that indicate the content or features of being filled (under the influence) with The Spirit.

First it is how we "speak" to one another (5:19). The passage says that we are to speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. This may seem unusual to us but it seems to refer to that content of conversation that has to do with some degree of spiritual content or benefit. This speaking is in contrast with what might be banal or crude.

The connection between our speaking and being filled with The Holy Spirit here in Ephesians 5 seems to be what might have been in Paul's mind in Ephesians 4:29-30. Here Paul appears to make a close connection between speech or talk that is corrupt (not building one other up) and the Holy Spirit. I am suggesting this from Paul because of the use of the term "and" in vers 30. The use of "and" appears to express a continuation of thought stated in vs 29.

The connection with The Holy Spirit and speech is something that we should take seriously about as an expression or manifestation of being under the influence (filled) of The Holy Spirit. How much of our speech to one another could be classified as spiritual or upbuilding? The Holy Spirit's desire surely is that we engage in spiritual conversations and upbuilding conversations with those in our sphere of influence and life.

REFLECT: Is the filling of The Holy Spirt (being under his influence) a matter of The Holy Spirit filling our mouths with spiritual and upbuilding words? What a thought!
